The quality of glassmaking in Southwark improved markedly in the 1830s when Banksiders Pellatt and Green (‘Glassmakers to the King’) became famous around the world for their superb cut glass and cameo encrustation products. Astley Pellatt’s encrustations were medallions or other ornaments enclosed in glass: in his own words like the fly in amber they effectively resist for ages the destructive action of the atmosphere.
